Another Addicted RockeTalker!

We always like to hear from RockeTalkers. Sometimes they say good things (like they can’t live without RockeTalk)- and sometimes they tell us we simply stink.

And then ocassionally come across something interesting that they posted on the web :)

Read on.

RockeTalk: A World that Never Sleeps

girl_power

“By now all those who know me, know that I’m totally addicted to RockeTalk. After all, who wouldn’t be? All my fellow RockeTalker would agree with me. It is by far the most addictive social networking application that I’ve got my hands on. So much so, that when my mother filled in the matrimony column for me, (don’t even ask about that!!!) in the ‘interests’ section I asked her to put in ‘RockeTalking’.

RockeTalking for me has become a part of my daily life now. Like I’ve said many times, I start my mornings not with a cup of tea or coffee, nor do I jump out of bed and rush to brush my teeth…I start it with greetings all my fellow RockeTalkers. It’s funny but RT has turned me into a very tolerant person. From being a girl, who hated talking to people for the first couple of hr’s after she’s woken up coz she couldn’t stand to listen to non-stop chatter to being someone who actually pops open one eye and searches for the cell phone just to connect with the world. Lolz…the next few seconds are spent in checking who all are online. Thank god I don’t have to search for them. All the online friends are listed with a green symbol against their name…and the lazy bone in me doesn’t want to send out individual msgs. So I simply mark one msg to all… and that marks the beginning of an endless chat session.

Let me tell you RT is not just about chatting, it has a host of other things to offer. Like any other ordinary person, I too work for a living, so can’t get away from work, and the ride to office in an auto can be quite boring. Well, RT comes to my rescue again!! For all of you who don’t know this, you can actually make mini videos on the move and share with your fellow RockeTalkers, or even other friends (post it to their email addresses). So as soon as I see something interesting I capture it through my RT camera, and simply post it either to my friends, or if I want to share it with everyone then I post it in the ‘Gallery’. And as I browse through the gallery, sitting at the back of an auto, enduring a bumpy ride to my office, I come across many interesting videos posted by other users. It’s interesting to know how creative people can get when given a camera in hand. In fact browsing the ‘gallery’ is a sure shot way to lift your low spirits. It always works for me!!

What it also does for me is provide entertainment. You know when you’re at work and feel the need for music, but think that the HR will be after your life if caught (as if you were stealing an imp document!!), that’s the time RT is my little savior!( If my HR girl read this she would never let me live in peace, lol). Don’t get me wrong, we don’t have music playing in there, it isn’t a radio channel…but what we have is live music. User’s at RockeTalk love to sing. Doesn’t matter if they are bathroom singers, the pure love for singing shows in their voice and its so much fun…to be honest, I’ve myself joined them with antakshari many a times lol…But ofcrs, that’s after office hrs. When I’m relaxing at home after a hard days work, and don’t wanna watch TV. In-fact a lot of college students putting up in hostels or as paying guests, swear by this as it’s just the perfect source of entertainment for them. When their friends from India doze off they begin the same rounds with users from other parts of the world, who have just started their day.

Speaking of users, I love people who state the obvious. Read this somewhere- “Social Media provides better coverage of news”…really? I guess this is why traditional news is being replaced by social news sites. The obvious is hardly stated and events are current. Like you would always get live updates on RT about the things happening around. So even if you are sitting in your office u will be able to find out the latest score of the IPL or get to know of the bomb blast that are happening in some part of India…coz user’s make video’s and share right away. I can safely say that some of the content that I see on RockeTalk, I don’t even see it on any of the news channels! The con’s being you sometimes get false information….because someone decided to have a little fun as he was getting bored stiff or this was his idea of getting attention of other users. Whatever it may be, at the end of it, its fun, entertaining and you’re connected to the world for free!!

So don’t just sit there and read this blog, come and connect with me and the world as well. Come join me on RockeTalk.

Meghna :)

Emailing photos, videos, voice from the phone

 RockeTalk: Ease of emailing photos, voice, videos from your phone

rocketalk-vs-real-simple1

The one most compelling reason to Download :)

Must tell you- I take lots photos, videos on my phone and email to my friends and family all over the world.  I was flipping through the pagers of Real Simple (teaches people how to simplify their life by making even complicated stuff  ‘Real Simple’) when I came across this bit on How to E-mail photos.

First- who carries a camera with them all the time? Isn’t the always-with-you-camera your mobile phone? So now let us go on.

After using RockeTalk for the last three years (see note at the end), it never occured to me that people might still be doing it the ‘old fashioned’ way that involved:

  • Downloading a compatible app (Picasa etc) to my PC (laptop)
  • Going through the pain of cable (that comes with the mobile phone in the box),
  • Then downloading a compatible program to make the cable work or
  • Even Bluetooth never crossed my mind (yes not all phones and laptops are Bluetooth capable)
  • Involving a computer for just emailing photos, short videos, audio (But why?)

The Real simple way:

real-simple-email-h

The RockeTalk way:

 From the compose screen, you can attach photos, videos selected from your mobile phone’s gallery or you can click to open the camera to click some there and then!

Add an audio (in your voice or just the about anything) to tell them more about what it is about.

Click on the Add recipients to go to your phone-book contacts. (or hand enter email addresses though I recommend you add the email addresses to your phone contact if you are going to email often.)

Select or enter as many email contacts as you want to.

Click ‘Send’ and you are done!

Right there. right then, they are already on their way to your loved ones (People use it for work too :( I hear)

Never had to go anywhere near the person or the computer to send it to them.

Keep friends and family updated constantly.

Never have to hear ‘But you never tell us what you are doing’.

Now you can do it in pictures, video, voice and be done. (Did I mention, you can do all this without actually talking on the phone? LOL. Yep another advantage of email.)

RockeTalk: The evolution revolution

Dear RockeTalkers,

You asked for changes we made them.

And we made changes without your asking for them. :)

We hope you like the way RockeTalk has changed and evolved right before your eyes.

RockeTalk-evolution

As you remember and keep talking about the colors, the screens and features of the past versions, we thought we would go back into our files and post some of the old screens (and new ones) to remind you of the good times we’ve all had, and continue to have, through the stages.

With encouragement from you, RockeTalk is now available for download on over 340 mobile phone models. If you have a model that we have not yest covered, please send your request to support@rocketalk.com

At times we have to let go of some features but we keep listening and try to make sure that we react quickly and meet any popular requests or high priority usability issues pointed out by you. And if necessary, add some of the features back. If there is something that you absolutely must have on RockeTalk, please write to feedback@rocketalk.com or ping me (amita) when I am online.

(No, I am not a bot. I need to eat, sleep, and attend to nature’s calls- just like you. An ocassional shower or outing doesn’t hurt either :) )

Thanks for all your wonderful feedback. RockeTalk would not be where it is today without your active participation.

Hope to catch you for a session of Antaakshri in Bollywood Hungaama or a impromptu Mushaira in Mehfil. Or in Flirts. Or Babel. Or …. I’m sure you’ll catch me ….

Keep those jokes and videos coming. (Yep. Heard you. We are increasing the size for uploading videos :) )

As always, we give you the application.  You make it fun.

Love to you all.

Amita

More exciting news!  We’ve made it even easier for new users to get RockeTalk.  We have partnered with LG one of the biggest, and most progressive, handset manufacturers in the world to pre-load RockeTalk on several new LG model phones in India.  As a start, RockeTalk is available now on all the new LG KT610 and KF750 (Secret) model phones, and several other models are also in the works.

On these phones there is no need to download! Lowtechgal’s: Chat and text messages demystified

W-t-f’ 2 ‘omg’: Chat and text messages demystified

RockeTalk is a voice chat application, right? People use their voices so why the chat lingo? Hey- voice rules. With voice there come emotions, the nuances and more. And there are no language barriers- people don’t need to learn to text using English characters while the text reads in Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, Tamil or or.. Swahili. And voice is so much more fun.

So… why am I doing this? Coz (because) I realize that there is a time and place for text only- like when you are sitting with your parents or the back row of the classroom, or in the room you share with two others who are sleeping or even worse- studying, etc. You just have to use text.

But with text comes a whole new language you got to learn- a language made up of ‘lol’, ‘ty’, ‘ne1’ etc. We can’t ignore the fact that we live in times when online chat and text messaging are the ‘normal’ ways of interacting with others- times when ‘ty’ and ‘np’ have started making casual and regular appearances in those rare face-to-face conversation. Heck- I’ve even seen resumes sprinkled with little smilies (emoticons) and ‘tyvm’.  Even whole books written in IM conversations- ‘TTYL’, ‘TTFN’, ‘L8r, G8r’ are a true reflection of the times we live in.

Even though RockeTalk is all about voice chat with voice (duh), pictures and videos, here are some terms you should know anyway- even on RockeTalk:

ASL= Age, Sex, location

LOL= Laugh Out Loud

Brb= Be right back

PM=Personal message

G2g= Got to go

TTYL= Talk To You Later

TTFN= Ta-Ta For Now

XOXOXO= hugs and kisses

Muaawh= Kiss (sound of a kiss)

ILU= I love you

CUL8R on RT= See you later on RockeTalk (Had to make that one … lol)

WTF= What the F#%&

LMAO= Laughing my ass off

ROFL= Rolling on the floor laughing

TY= Thank you

NP= No Problem

OMG= Oh my God

ATM= At the moment

Reading recommendation:

I just had to- as a service to the users, my friends and all others who make their way in to the increasingly popular entertainment -online chatting. (Thank heaven -RockeTalk plays a huge part- they don’t need to be stuck to their computers) This is why:

The other day, as I was going about my regular ‘job’ as the Evangelist and RockeTalk’s main point of contact with its users, I was reminded of a time in my life- long, long ago… as a ‘newb’  - slang term for a newcomer to online gaming or an Internet activity – not to be mixed up with ‘noob/n00b’. It was my auto-response that I had set to ‘brb’ while I was working on the graphics and layout for an informational ‘teaser’ for RockeTalk that did it!

I was dutifully checking incoming messages, just in case something showed up that needed immediate attention- a help question or something, when I saw a message come in from one of the ’seasoned’ users- ‘Are you reading this?’ And of course I responded yes. The next question- ‘What is brb?’ I quickly explained that it meant ‘be right back’.

As I was answering, I was making a quick note in my head of the times when users had very trusting come to me to ask such things… ‘lol’, ‘pm’, ‘ASL’…, reminding me that the terms regularly used in chat rooms were often not really clearly understood by users. The users- no newbies to the chat world, had been avid chatters from various chat sites for years, were at a loss and did not know who to turn to. Thank God I thought- on RockeTalk they can use voice.

I remembered sitting in the wee hours of the night, trying to stay awake while working on a project, having a blast downloading ‘free’ music from KAZAA… reading online forums on how to stay organized and focused lol… and playing Hearts with other online players while trying hard to figure out what ‘DH’ was or what in Pete’s name was ‘lol’ that kept showing up in every other sentence.

I was sure it was a secret language used by these people- I was so sure they were part of a cult and needed to have that ’secret code’. One night, I could not take it anymore.  I knew I could not go on. It had to be done…

With my palms sweating, my heart rate going through the roof… As soon as the next ‘lmao’ showed up on the screen, I asked.

This is somewhat how the conversation went:

Game- Hearts – Shoot the moon.

Players:Duskybeauty (Me), Flybynite, Pussinboots, Strangersnthenite (Hey- it had become sort of routine for us to wait for each other to get online and play- this was before you could send offliners. They had a good sense of humor and I was that funny little Indian girl – an odd one to begin with)

Duskybeauty (me): Got to ask you something. Promise me you will not laugh.

Pussinboots: OMG u feel it it 2? Honey you live in SD, rt? Should I come? I’m just round the block… a very long block that is ..lol

Me (Sitting in my chair laughing): Nooooo. No. Not that. I mean.. you are cute and everything.. but..

Me: Its about these messages…

Pussinboots: You mean u get those 2?

Me: But…I..

Pussinboots: LMAO.. but flybynite is mine. U lay off…. LOL.. don’t tell DH though ..lol…

Me: No. No. Not that. Promise you won’t tell anyone?

Pussinboots: That serious, yeh? Go on

Me: What is ‘LOL’?

Pussinboots: U r kidding, rt?

Me: Well.. no … (By now I was really squirming in my chair)

Well-I thought- there it was out there – the secret was out- I was not a part of their cult. They would all be laughing.

Turned out I was wrong. They had all asked the same question at some point!

That was then.

Well, now I’m at a point where I can give any text message/chat expert a run for their money. Thats not to say that I like to text. In fact I hate text messaging and avoid it as much as I can. I would much rather use my voice. I absolutely hate text messaging but I realize that text messaging has its place and given the situation (time and place), at times, is a necessity.

TTFN (Ta-Ta for now). Will be adding more from my list of interesting ‘text lingo’ from the text messaging era soon.. (OMG- TISLY -read- Oh my gosh-that is so last year) So… keep looking! CUL8 on RT (See you later on RockeTalk) Muaaw!!

BTW- You can download RockeTalk directly to your phone from http://m.RockeTalk.com  or for a cable download and for a list of supported phones, go to www.RockeTalk.com  the old fashioned way- internet from your computer. Or if you have a cool phone with Opera browser ..lol.. now we talking.. hehehe
